BMW of Clear Lake can help you identify what causes the lights on your vehicles to flicker.
If you observe your lights flickering while driving, it’s probably due to a failing battery. In the case when it’s not the battery, there are other common trouble spots that are likely responsible for the issue. No matter the cause, you should have the problem fixed ASAP. If your car lights aren’t working correctly, you could become a danger to yourself and other drivers.
The 3 areas dimming lights can happen are:
Because the battery is the easiest part to diagnose, this is where most of us will look first. If you suspect the battery is on its way out, bring it here so we can diagnose the issue and get the correct parts for your vehicle. While there are cases caused due to a failing battery, there are other components to consider.
If your vehicle battery is not the reason for your flickering car lights, you might be looking at a failing light bulb. Light bulbs are an easy and quick fix and present an opportunity to upgrade to new LED bulbs.
If your car has a bad fuse, you may be dealing with a more significant issue than you had originally anticipated. In most cases, a fuse dies when there is too much electricity runs through it. For example, if your anti-lock brakes are connected to a 10amp fuse, and the brake system receives more than 10amps of electricity, the fuse would fail. In this situation, a failed fuse could cause your anti-lock brakes to fail. If there’s a fuse that regularly fails, bring it in so we can accurately diagnose the larger, potentially more dangerous problem.
Lights flickering on your dashboard may also be one of the signs the alternator is failing. Consider this, you start your car with battery power, but the alternator provides the power when your vehicle is running. If you drive an older car with halogen headlights, you may notice them get dimmer with a failing alternator. On new cars with LED or HID lights, they may flicker or stop functioning altogether.
A dying light switch, either the headlight switch or the interior light dimmer, also needs to be checked out when you have flickering lights on the vehicle. In some situations, just replacing a worn-out switch might solve the issue, especially in vehicles with excessive wear or older cars. If your vehicle is new, there’s a possibility it could be symptoms of a more significant concern with the vehicle’s electrical system.
